Hatha Prenatal Yoga with Sonya Padron
In the tradition of BKS Iyengar

Sonya's class is full of wonderful, supportive information about wellness, pregnancy, labor, and birth (she is also a Birth Doula and an Ayurvedic Lifestyle Counselor In-Training), and her students love her friendly, upbeat energy.

One Harmony Mama shared recently that after only 2 yoga classes, she had learned more from Sonya than in the birthing classes she was taking at her doctor's office!

Sonya teaches in the Iyengar style of yoga, which is different from many of the other offerings at Harmony.

B.K.S. Iyengar is one of the best-known yoga teachers and the creator of one of the most popular styles of yoga in the world. This style of yoga is noted for great attention to detail and the precise alignment of postures, as well as the use of supportive props such as blocks, bolsters, and belts. The purpose of the props is to assist the student in attaining ideal alignment, no matter what the current state of the body's reach.

Iyengar's method, a form of hatha yoga, is based on giving primacy to the physical alignment of the body in the poses. It's principle is that once this balance is created in the body, it will be reflected in the mind.

The Iyengar style often appeals to people with an appreciation of subtle movements in the body as well as those who are very meticulous, technical, or have an interest in anatomy.

Iyengar-style yoga includes very little vinyasa flow (fluid transition from one pose to the next in conjunction with the breath). Instead, more time is spent with each pose, to achieve more perfect alignment and careful use of correct muscles and stabilization. Between poses, students rest in child's pose or savasana (corpse pose), a position of total relaxation.

As a consquence, Iyengar yoga builds strength and tone, through the careful activation of muscles and holding of poses, and is excellent for increasing flexibility. One should not expect an intense cardiovascular experience, given the absence of flow movements, since this style focuses on two other crucial compenents to good health, strength and flexibility.

This style of practice is adaptable to different levels, so is a good starting point for those with relatively low phycial fitness, and is very appealing to more advanced yogis who want to work on their alignment.
